Fall Prevention

Aggeus Fall Prevention Program

A large majority of hospitalizations in the elderly population can be attributed to falls and subsequent trauma. Broken hips with and without repair, attribute greatly to the mortality especially in the elderly. In the senior population the mortality rates related to falling injuries have been steadily increasing.

"$19 Billion has been spent annually on treating fall injuries."

Balance testing and evaluation can be closely linked to what Audiologists do in testing hearing, because, the organs of balance, other than touch or visual perception, is located in the ear.  So, some of the information you will see in this section is repeated on our Audiology page.

Testing can be broken down into two parts:

Indirect Audiologic Evaluation:

  • Middle Ear Analysis
  • Otoscopic Exam
  • Pure-tone Audiometry
  • Speech in noise audiometry
  • Hearing aid evaluation and fitting
  • OPOAE's, Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions

Direct Evaluation: Balance Pressure Plate

  • It requires only a few minutes to perform
  • This is a direct test of the resident risk for fall
  • It is NOT uncomfortable, or disturbing, to the resident
  • It does not require calorimetry, or insertion of warm or cold into the ear
  • It provides a "hard-copy" evaluation of the residents presence or absence of balance deficits

Why is Testing Important?

  • Vestibular dysfunction affects balance, hearing problems can frequently be linked to other disorders.
  • Dizziness or positional vertigo can also be attributed to problems affecting hearing
  • Certain medications can affect hearing and thus affect balance and gait.
  • Neuromuscular dysfunction caused by stroke or diseases such as Parkinson's, MS, ALS, Diabetes and others often affect gait in the elderly and may cause falls and injuries.
What does the program cost?
  • There are no costs to the Facility.
  • All charges are directed to the patient's insurance plan.  Aggeus Healthcare  accepts assignment of benefits from Medicare Part B, Medical Assistance, and most commercial insurance plans.   Please call  us for further information.
